I don’t know how the situation is now. But I hear lot of reporting that missionaries are working within Maldives. I know personally, this was the case back in 80s. The questions now remain are what shall we be doing now. Ask them to stop? Take actions against those who breach the constitution or should we allow them to carry out their work, because it’s human right? I am not advocating as a religious scholar or trying to put a political spin on it.
I would let the politicians and religious scholars to decide on the best cause of action. However, I have my own view. Something, I sincerely believe, and we as parents should think about. The world has become a global village. Internet allows free flow of information. We, Maldivians now travel a lot , and our children spend years and years in foreign lands, and live with people of different faiths. This is part of life, and we cannot escape this anymore.
So stopping them preaching in the Maldives do not stop them reaching us or our children. Never mind how hard we try or what measures we take, they will always find a way to reach us either within our country or through other mediums.
I am not advocating that we should stop our effort to prevent them reaching us or operating within Maldives. We can take all measures, but still it’s not full proof. SO, it’s time we think differently, and act differently. Educate and inform our children on comparative religion. Tell them about Jesus and inform them about major differences between Islam and Christianity. Inform them that Christian confer divinity upon Jesus, and what we think of him, and how to refute their argument, logically or from scriptures. The more you know, the stronger your faith will be.
For many of us, now what happens is, we hardly know anything about any other religions. So when someone tells us something, we don’t know what to do. Let me give you an example. They may tell you, doesn’t Quran tell you that Injeel is from GOD. You would say yes. Now the next question could be, so you believe Injeel is from GOD, but why do you reject Bible or Gospel. Do you have an answer? Probably not many will be able to answer. So arm yourself and your children with enough information to combat missionary activities. I think this is the way forward, and something we seriously have to consider.

Now that we have Peace TV in the cables, we are getting lots of information on comparative religion by Dr. Zakir Naik of India on a daily basis. We could always perform translation of his speeches into dhivehi.
